Topic: THE VIRTUE OF HUMILITY
BIBLE PASSAGE: Philippians 2:1-11
But he gives us more grace. That is why scripture says; God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble -James 4:6
Humility is a virtue every child of God is expected to exhibit. The life of Jesus symbolizes humility. An online dictionary defines humility as "the quality of having a modest or low view of one's importance". Humility can often get confused with having low self-esteem. Being humble is recognizing that you're flawed and have weaknesses.
In contrast, having low self-esteem is only viewing yourself as having flaws and weaknesses, and rarely acknowledging your own strengths.
Mark 10:45, says, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many" Jesus displayed humility in the washing of His disciples' feet, a duty usually reserved for the lowest slave in Bible times (John 13:4-15).
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who humbled himself to die a shameful death on the cross (Phil. 2:8). What do we get by being humble?
A life of humility attracts God's grace to you (James 4:6)
God will not oppose you (James 4:6)
You will be exalted/promoted by God (Phil. 2:9-11)
Humility and the fear of God bring wealth and honour and life (Prov. 22:4)
Humility brings honour (Prov. 29:23).
Humility grants us access to God's blessings.
These blessings of humility cannot be over emphasized. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others (Phil. 2:3-4).
ACTION
Clothe yourself with humility.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, take away pride from me and clothe me with humility.
